To Disney Infinity and Beyond

To say that I am excited about Disney’s new Disney Infinity game is an understatement.  I’ve had my eye on the development of Disney Infinity for some time now as it has always looked like a lot of fun.  The game will be released on August 18th.

I see how my daughters play with their toys and mix them all up.  The princess figures ride on the My Little Pony Ferris Wheel and the Squinkies have fun hanging out in the My Friends Lego Tree House.  It is a natural form of play that occurs when you mash-up all your toys in one room and just PLAY.  That is the idea behind the new video game Disney Infinity.  You get to pick your characters and play in their world or other characters worlds.  There is a Toy Box feature to the game where you can let your imagination run wild and you can customize the characters and create your own worlds.

You can do cool things like have Sully take flight in a Dumbo ride car or strap on a Buzz Lightyear jet pack and soar through the sky.  I am super excited to be able to turn the Toy Box into Sugar Rush and great my own race track.  Since seeing Wreck-it-Ralph I’ve always thought it would be fun to play Sugar Rush and now I can.  But there is a catch of course – you need the right Power Discs to make some of these things happen.

Power Discs

Power Discs are physical items that players use with the Play Set base to unlock items and customization. There are two types: a circular coin stacked under the figure to add buffs, and a hexagonal coin that provides items. In the Power Disc Pack, players receive a random set of coins. The Power Discs look to be the real key to customizing the game and from what I can tell there will be 3 series available.  What I don’t like is that it isn’t indicated on the package which Power Discs are included in the pouch.  But I suppose that is part of the fun of collecting them.   I am SO super excited about the Series 2 Power Discs because there is going to be a Nightmare Before Christmas customization available.

The following play sets are sold separately:

The big dilemma that I am facing is where to pre-purchase the game from.  There are several retailers offering great deals when you pre-purchase the game.  They are all offering the same starter pack for $74.99 which includes the following:

  • Video Game
  • Base
  • 3 Characters – Captain Jack Sparrow, Sulley, Mr. Incredible
  • 3 Play Sets – Pirates of the Caribbean, Monsters University, The Incredibles
  • Infinity Power Disc

When you pre-purchase you get

  • 1 Free Character
  • 1 Free Power Disc Pack (double-check your retailer as this is hard to verify online if they are all offering the 2-pack with pre-purchase)

Most retailers are offer the same deal, however there are a few that are offering even more.

  • Walmart is offering a $4.99 VUDU Movie credit.
  • GameStop is offering 30% extra in-store credit when you trade toward all Disney Infinity products.
  • The Disney Store is offering $15 off a future online purchase.

If you find any other great deals let me know in the comments section below.
