I just returned from the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration On The Road (@DisneySMMoms) in Berkeley, CA held at the Claremont Resort. The event was organized by Maria Bailey of MomTalkRadio, CEO of www.bsmmedia.com and numerous other ‘Mom Inspired’ companies. She is a trail blazer for mommy bloggers because she told companies that you need to work with mommy bloggers because WE have a giant voice, lots of friends and we like to talk and blog A LOT.
I have been blogging since 2004 and my blog started out as a way for me to easily share my experiences with having my 1st baby. At the time I started to blog I felt that the mommy blogging world was exploding and I had numerous companies asking me to review their products and write blog posts about them. While working as a mommy blogger I was also working as an Online Business Manager and helping my clients grow their online presence. I also applied those techniques to my own blog and saw a lot of growth in my business.
Here are my 5 quick tips for growing your business online and before you think your mommy blog is not a business, you are wrong. You can make money from your blog and I am going to tell you some tips on how to get started by growing your presence online. The key to working with companies is to have a good amount of followers. Companies are more likely to want to work with you if you have a large audience.
#1 – Get on Twitter - I know, duh. But this tip is something that some bloggers overlook or those new to blogging think that they don’t have time for. But I am here to tell you that you NEED to be on Twitter. The easiest way to grow your following is to be on Twitter because when you are blogging about a product, more than likely the company you are promoting will have a Twitter account. When you finish writing your blog post you will post a link to it on Twitter and add the company’s name in your Tweet. This Tweet will be seen by thousands of people who are following the company.
If you attend a blogging or networking event there will be a hashtag (#) used to promote the event. The best way to gain new followers and to find like-mined individuals is to use and follow that hashtag. I find that going back a day later and looking up the hashtag is beneficial as well because some events are so large that you can’t talk to everyone and get their business card. However, if you utilize that hashtag you can go back and see who used the hash tag and connect with them that way.
#2 – Follow Everyone on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Vine, LinkedIn, Pinterest – Where ever they are, you follow them. People liked to be followed (online that is) and they will more than likely return the favor and follow you back, thus growing your reach. When they follow you give them a shout out too. People LOVE shout outs!! Write on their Facebook wall and Tweet them.
#3 – Re-Tweet - The best thing to do during an event is to re-tweet other people’s tweets. It is still a good idea to do your own tweets but this will also increase the likely hood that they will follow you back.
#4 – Use hash tags on Twitter and on Facebook. Twitter invented the hashtag so it is pretty natural to be using it there. But have you tried using it on Facebook? It does work and it is beneficial. I used it for the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration On The Road and I found it a great way to connect with other people at the event. You can search for the hashtag on Facebook any posts that used the specific hashtag will be shown as a feed. I really liked using this because the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration On The Road is visiting many cities. This will allow me to follow the tour and even connect with other attendees in other cities.
#5 – Keep the conversation going. It is great to connect with new people on the day of or even the day after the event. Don’t forget to circle back with them every few days and keep the conversation going. Not only will this keep the relationship alive but you will be building likeability of you/your brand online.
