SEO Tips from a Disney Nerd

Here are some quick Internet Marketing tips that you can use when writing your blog posts. Just keep in mind that SEO tools are your friend.  SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and it is your key to getting people to your blog. This definition is taken directly from Wikipedia and it explains (better than I can) about what SEO is:

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or un-paid (“organic”) search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search,[1] news search and industry-specific vertical search engines.

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, what people search for, the actual search terms or keywords typed into search engines and which search engines are preferred by their targeted audience. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content, HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks, or inbound links, is another SEO tactic.

I recommend WordPress SEO by Yoast. The reason you need to have an SEO plugin is because it puts all of the SEO tools in one place and it tells you if you are putting in the correct content, meta description and keywords based upon your content.  The reason that I like the WordPress SEO by Yoast is because of the page analysis feature so before you post your blog you know what SEO content you need to add to make it a better blog.

#2 – Tags – Add Tags to your post, why? Because then people stay on your blog longer.  If you use tags in your posts, those will be hyperlinks to all of the other blog posts with the same keyword.

#3 – Do some keyword research. If you need some help finding the right keywords to add to the SEO section of your plugin try using the Google Keywords tool – http://www.googlekeywordtool.com/ This powerful and  tool will give you ideas on the top trending key words for your topic.  I have read that this tool will soon be going away and you will need to utilize your Google AdWords account instead.  But for now, its still around so use it as much as you can.

Also, remember to put your name as one of the keywords and if you blog about any other person you can put their name in the keywords section as well.  Add in the keywords from the product you are reviewing, the store you can buy it from and if you were at a blogging event then put in the name of the city, hotel and anything else that is relevant to the blog.

#4 – Use keywords on your photos that are in your posts.  The internet spiders crawl over your photos as well and collect that data.  When you upload an image to your blog there is usually an area where you can input some meta data.  Add in a title, alt text, and a description of your image.

#5 – Links – Use links as much as you can back to companies and other blogs.  They will be notified that someone is linking to their website and this will give you great exposure.  One of the things that made my previous mommy blog so popular is that I did many product reviews.  In the review I linked back to the company and this was a great way to get more exposure.

I hope these quick tips are helpful to you, let me know in the comments of any other tips you might have!
