New Mickey Mouse Cartoons

Disney is in the process of releasing 19 new Mickey & Friends cartoons that are 3 1/2 minutes long.  The first one was released on June 28th and new ones are released each Friday.  These are fun 2-D slapstick type of comedies and are a lot of fun to watch.  My girls really like them too.  I really enjoy the style that the characters are drawn in because their bodies are really loose this helps them to get into and out of crazy situations and act even more ‘goofy’ than usual. 😉   The music in the cartoons are fun and if you look closely there is a tribute to Walt Disney or something to do with Disney history.  I don’t want to ruin it for you by telling you what they are so you will have to watch them for yourself.

The settings are full of charming art details and each harkens back to the chic, stylized art of the ’50s and ’60s. “It was fun to go to the Disney archives and dig up old paintings and development art from ‘101 Dalmatians,’” Paul said, and then went on to talk more about other inspirations like Mary Blair. “Mary Blair’s stuff is always inspiring and you can really see her touch, especially in our Swiss location. Because we had stories in so many different settings, we were able to play around with the backgrounds and accentuate the mood or find something that feels appropriate for each story.” ~ Disney Insider, 06/23/13

After I read that quote from Disney Insider it all clicked, Mary Blair, and 101 Dalmatians, yes that is what the backdrops remind me of; I loved that era of Disney design. When you watch the cartoon Yodelberg you will see a lot of Mary Blair inspired art.

Disney has also released an app where you can view the new shorts as well as some beloved classics.  The name of the App is Mickey Video. Each of Mickey’s friends has their own sections on the app with the cartoon shorts that feature them, even the vintage ones.  In addition to the cartoons there are featured videos how the new Cartoons are made in a series called “Behind the Animation: Mickey Cartoons” brought to us by Disney Insider.  So my kids are pretty much addicted to this app.

On the app you can view vintage Mickey & Friends shorts such as :

  • Mickey and the Seal
  • Magician Mickey
  • Lonesome Ghosts (I loved this one when I was little)
  • Mr. Mouse Takes a Trip
  • And many more

You can watch all of the Mickey & friends cartoons here –
