Disneyland History – Fantasmic! Debut May 13, 1992 – #Disneyland60

Fantasmic! – May 13, 1992

On May 13, 1992 nighttime entertainment at Disneyland was again reinvented with the debut of Fantasmic! It is an outdoor live musical and pyrotechnic show that takes place on the Rivers of America in Frontierland. During the show the use of smoke machines, lasers, fire, animated movie projections on water walls, live action and water canons help to bring the excitement to life.

Opening Day – May 13, 1992 – Maleficent and then Walt Disney Company CEO Michael Eisner

The show takes place at night, normally around 9:00 and lasts for 22 minutes. Most times there is a second showing at 10:30 and even a third showing depending upon how late the park is open.

The classic story of good vs. evil unfolds when Mickey Mouse takes on some of Disney’s most iconic villains such as Ursula, Maleficent, Chernabog, The Wicked Queen.

Disney animation is shown on large water screens measuring 30 feet tall, 50 feet wide and four inches thick.  Some of the movies that appear are:

  • Fantasia
  • Dumbo
  • Pinocchio
  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

In 2009 a 20 foot tall fire breathing Maleficent dragon was added to the show.

Why I love Fantasmic!

I love the show Fantasmic! and the soundtrack is so much fun to listen to at home. The swelling of the music makes my heart swell too and I get lost in what I am doing while listening to it. It certainly is part of the park that you can take home with you and enjoy as much as you want.

Fantasmic! also revitalized an area of Disneyland in need of excitement and instantly became a guest favorite as crowds begin to form in the area 75 minutes before the show.

After the 9:00 show you can stay in the area and still enjoy a great view of Disneyland Fireworks.

When my family and I visit Disneyland this is a must see nighttime show for us.  My girls love the music and they like to see many of the characters on the Mark Twain at the end of the show.

Fantasmic! can also be found in Walt Disney World at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and in Toyko DisneySea.

“Some imagination, huh?”

If you could be any character in the show who would you be?

I would want to be in the segment with Peter Pan &  Captain Hook.  I love how they get to swing around on the ship, it looks like a lot of fun.
