This blog post is one in a series by the Magical Blogorail about famous Disney couples. During the series you will have the opportunity to win a D23 2-piece luggage set from American Tourister. Read through this post to learn how you can enter to win.
Mickey and Minnie Mouse are my favorite Disney characters. Walt created Mickey Mouse on a disappointing train ride back from New York City where he lost his character right of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to distributor Charles Mintz. The Walt Disney company obtained the rights again to Oswald in 2006. However, I feel that Mickey Mouse is certainly an extension of Walt Disney and he is our connection back to Walt.
Mickey and Minnie have been together for over 85 years. They debuted together in the 1928 short Steamboat Willie. While it has been reported that Plane Crazy was actually their first short it was Steamboat Willie that was released first.
Over the years Mickey and Minnie have been on many adventures together and grown as a couple. Even when an alley cat disrupts their date in “Mickey Steps Out” (1931) or when Mickey is late for a date with Minnie in “Mickey’s Delayed Date” (1947) they have remained best friends and sweethearts.
Their love story is so sweet, you can really tell that Mickey is always going to be there for Minnie which is very apparent in the latest short “Get a Horse!” (2013), Academy Award Nominee for Best Animated Short. In the short Mickey and his friends are headed out for a day of fun on a hayride until Pete show’s up and ruins the fun. He tries to take Minnie Mouse but of course Mickey and his friends rescue Minnie and save the day.
Mickey and Minnie have appeared in over 70 shorts together and their on screen relationship still continues today. Now, a whole new generation of children can learn problem solving skills, math and their ABC’s from Mickey and Friends on the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on Disney Junior, the show has been on since 2006. In 2013 a new collection of Mickey Mouse Shorts were made and they are really funny. I feel they are a reflection on the early Mickey Mouse shorts with their slapstick humor. If you want to watch vintage Mickey and Friends shorts go to video.Disney.com.
Here is fun video I took of of Mickey and Minnie dancing on Main Street, USA. During this video Minnie dances to Ain’t She Sweet and then Mickey and Minnie dance together to So This is Love.
