Disney Nerd Screams for Space Mountain at Disneyland

Magical Blogorail Blue

Welcome to the first stop aboard Magical Blogorail Blue. Enjoy the ride as we share the Disney attraction that makes us scream the loudest.

The ride that makes this Disney nerd scream the loudest is Space Mountain.  It is an indoor dark roller coaster and it has been a part of Disneyland since 1977.

SpaceMountainI have ridden Space Mountain at Disneyland too many times to count, but it doesn’t matter because once I get to the top of the lift, make that first turn, and then start to descend down I just start screaming  You would think that by now this ride would be predictable for me but it is not, I still scream loud like it is my first time experiencing this ride and I scream the loudest when the we get to the bottom.

It is such an awesome ride experience but I believe that this ride is all about the atmosphere, that is why I was disappointed when I last rode it in April of 2013 they held the line queue outside of the attraction and didn’t let riders inside to experience the majority of the line queue atmosphere.  We did get to wait in the queue area where riders are loading but I missed hearing the radio chatter in the blue tunnel.   I have always enjoyed the line queue as part of the anticipation of getting on the ride.  I believe this line queue change has to do with the way they handle the FastPass tickets.

Which brings me to my this video of the ride and I think proves my point that Space Mountain is all about the atMOUSEphere.  If you were to ride this attraction with the lights on then it would just be another theme park roller coaster, fun for that moment but not very memorable.  Warning, only view this video if you want to see what it is like to ride Space Mountain with the lights on.

The other aspect that really makes Space Mountain an experience is the music.  The version of music that I really like is the older version by Dick Dale because I like guitars and his version reminds me of Surfing with the Alien by Joe Satriani. You can listen to the  Dick Dale soundtrack for some Space Mountain nostalgia.  The current ride music is by Michael Giacchino and you can purchase this version on the  Disneyland Resort Soundtrack, listen to a sample of it on iTunes.

During my last visit to Disneyland I was able to experience the ride with my 7 year old daughter for her first time. I am not sure which one of us scream the loudest.  She thought is was a really cool ride and wanted to get right back in line and do it again, that’s my girl.

Thank you for joining me today. Your next stop on the Magical Blogorail Loop is Ideally Disney.

  1. Of course, I’ve not been on the Disneyland version, but I’m sure I’d do some screaming on the Walt Disney World one. Not as much as Tower of Terror though – that’s my ride that makes me scream and laugh at the same time!

  2. I’ve heard the Disneyland Space Mountain is better…. hope to someday try it! As of now, the WDW Space just makes me smile 🙂 and usually gives me a few other screaming people to laugh at!

  3. When I rode Space at Disneyland, I liked how we sat by twos. At WDW, it is single file so I really enjoyed that aspect. I had no idea that one of the songs used at DL is a Joe Satriani song. I absolutely love him — wickedly talented guitarist! Thank you so much for this post. I loved it!

    • Pixie Brenda,Thank you for your comment. I should clarify that it is not a Joe Satriani song, but it sounds like it may be inspired by Joe’s Surfing with an Alien song. The old music was by Dick Dale, another awesome guitarist. But I scream so loud I don’t even hear the music anymore!! I’ve ridden Space Mountain at WDW as well and I prefer the sitting side by side in Disneyland better too.
