While in Los Angeles for the Moana press junket our blogger group got the opportunity to swing by the Disney Channel building (a place I had never been to before) to chat with the cast of Disney Channel’s new hit show “Stuck in the Middle” and screen the new short series “Stuck in the Store.”
About the Show
The show follows 12-year-old Harley Diaz as she maneuvers her way through the bustle of being a middle child in a family with six other siblings. The heartfelt and comedic stories of a big family find Harley devising creative ways to cope with – and stand out – in her family’s busy suburban Massachusetts household. Her ingenuity often wins the day for the Diaz family, even with many different personalities living under one roof.
I am an only child, the thought of having six siblings is mind blowing to me.
Obviously the cast is huge, there are 9 people in the Family!! This is how I remember who they all are in the photo.
- Ariana Greenblatt as Daphne Diaz (the youngest)
- Malachi Barton as “Beast” Diaz (twin boy)
- Nicolas Bechtel as Lewie Diaz (other twin boy)
- Jenna Ortega as Harley Diaz (stuck in the middle)
- Isaak Presley as Ethan Diaz (the oldest boy)
- Kayla Maisonet as Georgie Diaz (the second oldest)
- Ronni Hawk as Rachel Diaz (the oldest)
- Cerina Vincent as Suzy Diaz (the mom)
- Joe Nieves as Tom Diaz (the dad)
While we chatted with the cast it was clear to see that they are a family off screen as well. The love and friendship they have for each other is clear. Some of the cast come from large families, others have small families or are only children.
Suzy Diaz (the mom) still plays the role of their mom off camera as well. Making sure the kids are having a good time when the cameras aren’t rolling. While not a mother in real life Suzy said “I always wanted seven kids. And it just like was a weird childhood thing like you know fantasy sequence in like all of us, and I have them all but in a different form. It’s really cool. We’re bonded.”
Jenna Ortega said “It’s like they’re my second family.”
Joe Nieves said that happened right from day one, it was immediate and fantastic.
Isaak Presley and Malachi Barton are only children. Isaak said “it was like walking into this big family, it was actually like adopting a family.” Malachi said “it’s really fun to have siblings onset.”
Isaak went on to say “it’s great because we’re like a real family, we have everything which really helps brings the onset chemistry. We have the bickering and we have the jokes and we have the emotional moments together that really helps bring that to the screen. You know if everything was happy and joyful 24/7 I feel like it’d be very phony. But because we experience all the emotions that kids do it really helps onscreen.”
The kids in the cast said that before they were on the show they would watch the Disney Channel and pretend to do the Disney Channel commercial bumper with the wand that makes the Mickey Mouse ears. Their dream has finally come true and they all just finished filming their Disney Channel commercial bumpers for their show. Listening to the cast tell their stories of when they recently filmed their bumpers and how supportive they were of each other during the process really illustrated their love and support for each other.
You can read this transcript from our interview, the cast was adorable when recounting their experience.
JENNA ORTEGA: I’m like happy and excited to be there because when I was younger the twirl with the baton or whatever and I would look in my mirror and when I first said I wanted to be an actress I told my parents, I want to be on the Disney Channel show, you just watch. They’re like, okay Jenna like slow your roll and I’d twirl my baton and I’d go, hi, I’m Jenna Ortega and you’re watching Disney Channel. So like Isaac was the first one to go up and I was shaking off camera and Nicolas was like, Jenna, whoa, whoa, whoa, calm down, calm down.
NICOLAS : Chill, chill.
JENNA ORTEGA: Ronni was going and I was like screaming. I was so excited by the time it came to me. I did the first one and then I started balling, and the makeup artist was like, Jenna, you’ve got makeup on, be careful.
ISAAK PRESLEY: I’m the first one and obviously I have the nerves because I’m the first one who of the cast to to go and Jenna’s in the other room getting all emotional and I’m starting to get emotional. I’m like, Jenna stop.
KAYLA: There was like a glass wall so whoever was going you could see. And after everyone finished we’d ask is that okay you guys? Did I do good?
JENNA: Like our faces were up against the wall. We’re like watching.
MALACHI : And the whole cast has everyone’s back.
ISAAK PRESLEY: We were all rooting each other on.
JENNA ORTEGA : Yeah.
ISAAK PRESLEY : I mean I was equally as excited for Nick to do it as I was excited to do it or anybody else. Like you know you can kind of see them and you’re all like, like how Jenna was crying and she was even up there yet. I mean it’s just, you know we’re all very connected.
I really enjoyed listening to how connected they are too each other. “Stuck in the Middle” was just renewed for a second season the the whole cast was overjoyed! New shows for season 2 will air early 2017
