What is 11 feet tall, 8 inches and weighs between 5,000 – 13,000 each?
The iconic C-A-L-I-F-O-R-N-I-A letters from Disneyland Resort of course.
These letters once stood outside the entrance to Disney California Adventure for almost a decade. The letters were donated from Disney to the Friends of the California State Fair in 2012. The Golden 1 Credit Union sponsored the effort to install them. The letters made their trip from Southern California and were installed just in time for opening day of the California State Fair on July 12, 2013.
A dedication ceremony was held on July 11, 2013 with remarks by Mary Niven, Disney California Adventure Park Vice President. She said “The C-A-L-I-F-O-R-N-I-A letters were popular with millions of Disneyland Resort guests and Cal Expo is a perfect destination to continue their legacy.” In addition to Mary’s remarks Rick Pickering the CEO of Cal Expo and Donna Bland the President and CEO of Golden 1 Credit Union addressed the crowd. Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) will be leading the effort to install energy-efficient LED lights after the fair so that the letters can continue to shine on.
Members of the Cal Expo Governing Board were also in attendance for the dedication. After the speeches the iconic letters were christened by Cal Expo Board Chairman Willie Pelote, Sr. with a bottle of Champagne
I attended the dedication ceremony at CalExpo and was super excited to see so many people come out for the event. Radio Disney was there and they gave out some awesome Monsters University, Disney Jr and Teen Beach Movie (the next ‘high school musical’) swag. My girls were jazzed to get all of the goodies. The Radio Disney crew is always having so much fun no matter where they are. Thank you Radio Disney for bringing the Pixie Dust to the event.
Being a Sacramento native I’ve walked the entrance of Cal Expo many times and walking up to the letters was quite a rush. I had forgotten how tall those letters are. In my mind I was hoping to be magically transported to the entrance of Disney California Adventure, but I was not. My feet stuck firmly to the ground in Sacramento.
This is a wonderful addition to Cal Expo because there can be some Disney magic in Northern California and we can visit them anytime. As I drove away from the event today I looked in my rear view mirror and saw dozens of families making their way to the letters to get a photo of our newest attraction. I wonder if Cal Expo also received the overlays for the letters? It would be fun to see the letters with their Holiday stripes on during Christmas. Just hoping that Sacramento can keep it classy and not deface the letters or ruin them.
The California State Fair is open from July 12-28, 2013 but don’t worry if you can’t make it to the fair to see the letters because they will be in Sacramento for a very long time. For more information about the California State Fair visit http://www.BigFun.Org
